Avengers: Infinity War Has Broken $2 Billion At Box Office

Marvel’s Avengers are now part a new elite supergroup – the $2 billion club. The comic book giant’s latest blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War is now one of just a handful of films to have made more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office.

It’s a feat only three films have achieved before: Avatar, Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens . Avengers: Infinity War, which opened in UK cinemas in April, tipped past the $2 billion mark this Monday, having previously broken records as the fastest film to reach $1 billion.

Reportedly the second most expensive film ever made, it brings together dozens of characters from previous Marvel films, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), as they team up to fight the super-villain Thanos (Josh Brolin).

Reviews were largely positive, with The Times praising it as “furiously entertaining”, though Telegraph critic Tim Robey took issue with the “disappointingly basic” plotline.

A sequel is set for release in May 2019, while the film’s success means the Marvel movie production line looks unlikely to slow down for the foreseeable future.

James Cameron, the director of both Avatar and Titanic, might not be pleased by the news. In April, Cameron complained about the way Marvel’s films were dominating the box office.

“I’m hoping we’ll start getting ‘Avenger’ fatigue here pretty soon,” Cameron told IndieWire . “Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”
