The One Show’s Alex Jones opened up about motherhood and her relationship in a candid new interview with The Mirror on Sunday (26 November).
The 40-year-old TV presenter – who has been married for almost two years to partner Charlie Thomson – gave birth to the couple’s first child, a son called Teddy, in January.
Speaking about family life, Alex said: ‘We’re a lot more centred since Teddy’s come. It’s a slower pace. We had a very fun life, but naturally things have just calmed and I was ready for that.’
Adding that Teddy has brought her and husband Charlie closer together, she continued: ‘You become a team and it strengthens your relationship.
‘You have to rely on each other, especially because we’re both working. I couldn’t do it without Charlie.’
Chatting about the time she spent away from The One Show during her maternity leave, Alex revealed that it was ‘hard’.
‘It would have been nice to have six months off, but I was a bit naïve. I was like, “Yeah, I’ll be back in three months”, and obviously it’s not as easy as that and I wasn’t ready,’ she said.
‘So we started off with just two days. When you have a baby in your late 30s-early 40s, you’re at the peak of your career, so taking time off is hard.
‘But you just have to weigh up what’s most important, and for me there was no question that it would be to have a family. But as much as I was really excited about having a baby, I was worried about going on maternity, because I love and respect my job and know it’s one a lot of other people would like to do.’
Alex also hinted that she and Charlie would like to have more children, saying: ‘I always wanted a family, and I was lucky to have a lovely career and job I love alongside it, but my main ambition is hopefully be a great mum and maybe a mum to another, if we’re lucky. I’m really happy where I am.’
